Appraisal note

Mary Boyd was interested in the history of the Pacific from very early on in her careeer. She went to England in the 1950/51 period on study leave and was based at the London University and the London School of Economics. She was also involved with the Institute of Commonwealth Studies. Within her personal correspondence there is a letter from Derek Freeman, an eminent Canberra based anthropologist, dated 1948, which encourages her to contact Jim Davidson re her interest in Pacific history. This was the beginning of a long and fruitful professional relationship with the Australian based Pacific historians.

When she first went to England to study in the early 1950's, there were no official Pacific History courses. She therefore studied African history, and later went on to teach this at Victoria University.
