Any Victoria University student or staff member is entitled to access all the Libraries and their collections. All you need is your University ID. If you're not currently a student or staff member, see “Library access” below.
If you live outside the Wellington area, the Distance Lending Service is your gateway to the Library's resources.
See quick reference information about what you can borrow, including loan periods, overdue fine rates, and frequently asked questions.
Items in high demand are placed on restricted issue. Closed reserve items are issued for a few hours at a time, and three-day loan items for three days.
If the item you need is at another library within the University, you may be able to have it delivered to the library you use most regularly through our Intersite Delivery service.
Most Ph.D. theses and some Masters theses submitted to the University have been digitised and are now available through ResearchArchive. (There are some theses which we do not have permission to make available digitally.)
Print theses are available from the Closed Reserve Desk at the Central Library, and from the Issue Desk at the other libraries. Information on theses is in the Library Catalogue, which will indicate where the thesis is held.
If the Library does not hold the book you want, we have two services to help you obtain copies from another library.
Borrow Direct gives you direct access to the collections of Auckland University of Technology, the University of Otago, and the University of Waikato, from the Library Catalogue.
Our Interloan service can access the collections of almost every library in the world. Please try Borrow Direct first, and only use this service if you cannot obtain your item through Borrow Direct.
If you believe you have identified an item the Library should buy, you can ask us to purchase a copy by filling out our purchase recommendation form.
For more information about purchasing decisions and the purchasing process please contact the Collection Management team. The Library's Collection Development and Management Policy guides all purchase decisions.
New Zealand School of Music Students and Staff can borrow items from Massey University Library free of charge.
Some older, little-used material is held in storage. These items are marked as ‘Offsite Storage’ in the Library Catalogue. To obtain material from storage please consult the Library Catalogue help on requesting Offsite items.
Current students and staff can borrow a laptop at the Central Library for their use within the library.
If you're not a current Victoria student or staff member, you may still be able to get access to the Library.
