For items that we do not hold and cannot be obtained through Borrow Direct, the Library operates an inter-library loan (“interloan”) service. Through interloans you can access the collections of other libraries, nationally and internationally. This service is available to all current staff and students of Victoria University of Wellington for your private research, study, and teaching only.
For books (including conference proceedings) and theses, we will borrow a copy from another library and have it shipped to us for you to borrow and use. These can be collected from the Issue Desk at the library you specify when you submit your request, and are returned to the same place. Theses are reference only and may not be taken out of the library.
For single chapters from books, or for journal articles you cannot locate in Journal Finder, we will have a copy made and sent to us electronically, which will then be emailed to you as a PDF. This service is limited by the restrictions of the Copyright Act 1994. If you prefer not to receive PDFs, we can print a copy for you, for an additional charge of $2.
Information for other libraries about requesting interloans from us is also available.
The cost of interloans is subsidised from the Library's general budget. Non-urgent interloans from within New Zealand are free to you. Urgent interloans—only available for items sourced within New Zealand—cost $20 each. If you require a physical copy of a journal article or book chapter, this will cost $2.
Overdue interloans are charged a 15c fine per day, or $1.50 per day if they have been recalled.
Interloan charges (but not overdue fines) can be billed to a departmental account or research grant; specify the account number when you submit your request. They may also be paid in the normal fashion: see “How do I pay my Library fines and charges?”
Standard interloans obtained within New Zealand usually arrive in 8–10 working days.
Urgent interloans (New Zealand only) usually arrive in 24–48 hours, weekends excluded.
Overseas interloans arrive in approximately 2–8 weeks depending on the location from where the item is being sent.
