About how material is shelved
The W.J. Scott Library uses both the Dewey Decimal Classification system (callmarks like 001.12...) and the Library of Congress Classification system (callmarks like LB1105 B929...) for parts of its collection, unlike the other libraries, which use Library of Congress exclusively.
- The general collection uses the Library of Congress system, but considerable amounts of older material are classified using the Dewey system. There is an ongoing project to convert the legacy Dewey material to Library of Congress classification. Dewey-classified items are shelved on the mezzanine; the rest of the general collection is shelved on the ground floor.
- The library maintains collections of junior fiction and junior non-fiction as a resource for trainee teachers. Both have callmarks preceded by a "J". Fiction is shelved alphabetically by author; non-fiction has a Dewey callmark. They are shelved on the ground floor.
- Journals are shelved alphabetically by title.
